Porvoo \u2013 one of Finland\u2019s oldest towns<\/h2>\n

Porvoo is one of Finland\u2019s oldest towns and one of the country\u2019s best-preserved historic environments.<\/p>\n

The heart of the town is Old Porvoo, where narrow cobblestone streets wind between colourful wooden houses, small courtyards, boutiques and historic buildings. Down by the river, the famous red ochre shore houses create one of Finland\u2019s most recognisable landscapes.<\/p>\n

Standing above the Old Town is Porvoo Cathedral, a landmark that has witnessed centuries of Finnish history. The cathedral played an important role in 1809, when the Diet of Porvoo marked a turning point in Finland\u2019s history as an autonomous Grand Duchy.<\/p>\n

Walking through Porvoo is less about individual sights and more about experiencing the town as a whole \u2013 its streets, river, architecture and layers of history.<\/p>\n

Finnish art and culture in Porvoo<\/h2>\n

Porvoo has long attracted writers and artists.<\/p>\n

3 Days | Historic Coastal Towns of Finland \u2013 Porvoo & Loviisa<\/h2>\n\t\t\t

Day 1: Helsinki \u2013 Porvoo | Cobblestone Streets & Red Shore Houses<\/h3>\n

We leave Helsinki and travel east to Porvoo, one of Finland\u2019s oldest and most beautiful towns.<\/p>\n

Our guided walk takes us through the heart of Old Porvoo, where cobblestone streets wind between colourful wooden houses, small courtyards and historic buildings. Along the river, we see Porvoo\u2019s famous red ochre shore houses \u2013 one of the most recognisable landscapes in Finland.<\/p>\n

We visit Porvoo Cathedral, which has stood at the heart of the town for centuries and played an important role in Finnish history. We also explore the riverside and have time to enjoy the atmosphere of the Old Town at our own pace.<\/p>\n

Those interested in Finnish art and culture can add a visit connected with national poet J. L. Runeberg or celebrated Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt.<\/p>\n

Later, we continue to our accommodation and enjoy a free evening.<\/p>\n

Day 2: Loviisa | Wooden Houses, Seaside Life & Finnish History<\/h3>\n

Today we travel to Loviisa, a charming small town on the coast of the Gulf of Finland.<\/p>\n

We begin in the historic old town, where traditional wooden houses, gardens and quiet streets create an atmosphere that feels wonderfully removed from modern city life.<\/p>\n

During our walk, we discover the history of Loviisa and visit the impressive red-brick Loviisa Church, one of the town\u2019s best-known landmarks.<\/p>\n

We continue towards Laivasilta, the historic harbour area, where old salt warehouses and the waterfront tell the story of Loviisa\u2019s maritime past.<\/p>\n

We also see Kuningattarenranta, where contemporary wooden architecture and seaside living offer an interesting contrast to the historic town. The combination shows how the tradition of Finnish wooden towns continues in a modern form.<\/p>\n

The rest of the day is free to enjoy Loviisa and its relaxed coastal atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Day 3: Svartholma Sea Fortress | An Island in Finnish History \u2013 Helsinki<\/h3>\n

After breakfast, we head to the coast and travel by boat to Svartholma Sea Fortress, located on an island just outside Loviisa.<\/p>\n

Built in the 18th century, Svartholma formed part of Sweden\u2019s eastern defence system together with the land fortress in Loviisa. Today, the ruins of the fortress rise from the peaceful archipelago and offer a fascinating combination of military history, island nature and views across the Gulf of Finland.<\/p>\n

We explore the fortress and hear stories of life on this strategic island during a period when the borders and powers of Northern Europe were changing.<\/p>\n

There is time to enjoy the island and the surrounding archipelago before returning by boat to the mainland.<\/p>\n

Our driver is waiting for us in Loviisa, and we begin our journey back to Helsinki.<\/p>\n
