In Southeastern Finland, imperial history comes vividly to life. We begin in historic Hamina, a town shaped by changing borders and Finland’s years as an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. From Hamina, we continue to Kotka and the beautiful Langinkoski rapids, where the Imperial Fishing Lodge of Emperor Alexander III was completed in 1889.

Here, Alexander III and his Danish-born wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna, could leave the formalities of imperial court life behind and spend time with their family surrounded by Finnish nature.

Hamina – stories from Imperial Finland

Hamina has witnessed many turning points in Finnish history. Its distinctive circular town plan, radial streets and historic fortifications create a fascinating setting for exploring the town on foot.

Here we discover Hamina from an imperial perspective – as a town influenced by changing borders and Finland’s position between Sweden and Russia.

During the 19th century, Finland was an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. This period left its mark on Hamina and forms an important chapter in the story of the town and Southeastern Finland.

Langinkoski – an Emperor’s Finnish retreat

The story of Langinkoski and Alexander III began in 1880, when the future emperor visited the famous salmon rapids of the River Kymijoki. The beautiful surroundings and excellent fishing made a lasting impression on him.

Alexander returned to Langinkoski as Emperor in 1887 together with Empress Maria Feodorovna, born Princess Dagmar of Denmark. Following their visit, an imperial fishing lodge was commissioned beside the rapids.

The wooden lodge was designed by Finnish architects and completed in 1889. Rather than creating another grand imperial residence, the lodge was built in a simple Finnish style, offering the imperial family a very different setting from court life in St Petersburg.

At Langinkoski, the family could enjoy an informal summer life. They spent their days fishing, walking in nature, preparing food and enjoying time together away from the strict etiquette of the imperial court.

Today, the beautifully preserved Imperial Fishing Lodge, its original interiors and the surrounding landscape offer a rare glimpse into the private life of Emperor Alexander III and his family.
