Bengtskär – the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries

Standing on a rocky island at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, Bengtskär is one of Finland’s great maritime landmarks.

At 52 metres, it is the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries. Its isolated location, dramatic wartime history and magnificent views across the open Baltic Sea make Bengtskär an unforgettable destination.

The journey through the archipelago is an experience in itself. Once on the island, discover the lighthouse, hear stories of lighthouse keepers and the dramatic Battle of Bengtskär, and climb towards the top for spectacular views over the surrounding sea.

For those who want to stay longer, it is also possible to spend a night in the lighthouse.

Isokari – lighthouse life in a Finnish National Park

Isokari lies in the beautiful Bothnian Sea National Park, surrounded by open sea and diverse island nature.

The historic lighthouse rises above forests, meadows and rocky shores, while nature trails introduce us to the landscape and wildlife of the island. During summer, sheep graze freely on Isokari, adding to its wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Visit Isokari on a day cruise or stay overnight close to the lighthouse and experience the island after the day visitors have returned to the mainland.

Utö – life on Finland’s southernmost inhabited island

Utö offers something different – this is not simply a lighthouse island but a living community at the outer edge of the Finnish archipelago.

Finland’s southernmost year-round inhabited island has a long history connected with seafaring, pilotage and the Baltic Sea. Its lighthouse is Finland’s oldest operating lighthouse, and remarkably, there is even a small church inside.

The long journey through the Archipelago Sea is an essential part of the experience. Once in Utö, slow down, explore the rocky island landscape, discover its maritime history and watch the ships and changing weather out at sea.

We recommend staying for two or three days to truly experience the atmosphere of this remote island community.

Söderskär – a lighthouse escape from Helsinki

For travellers staying in Helsinki, Söderskär offers a wonderful opportunity to leave the city behind and experience Finland’s outer archipelago.

Located in the Porvoo archipelago, the historic lighthouse stands among rugged rocky islands surrounded by the Baltic Sea.

A summer boat journey takes us from the more sheltered coastal waters towards the open archipelago, where seabirds, wind and sea become part of the experience.

Good to know – weather conditions

Life in the Finnish archipelago is always shaped by the sea.

Lighthouse excursions and boat connections are subject to weather and sea conditions. Strong winds, high waves or other conditions affecting safe navigation or landing may result in changes to schedules, alternative arrangements or cancellation of a planned excursion.

Safety always comes first, and the final decision regarding boat operations and landing is made by the vessel operator.

We therefore recommend allowing some flexibility in your itinerary when including a lighthouse island in your journey.
