Valletta Baroque Festival – 11.01.-28.01.2024 : Since its launch in 2013, the Valletta Baroque Festival has treated audiences to a unique event featuring some of the best soloists and ensembles in the baroque music scene. Taking as its main venue one of the oldest working theatres in the world, Teatru Manoel, this prestigious two-week festival also plays out within many wonderful baroque and historical venues, such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and The Verdala Palace. Organised every January the festival highlights the enormous versatility of the baroque idiom and its mass appeal. Above all the festival’s strength lies in the wonderful baroque settings that one finds in Valletta and the Maltese archipelago; a precious legacy that each and every one of us Maltese treasure.

 

CARNIVAL MALTA – 09.02.-13.02.2024: Once a year, in mid-February – start March traditional carnivals are held in Valletta and Nadur on Gozo Island. Colorful parades take place in the streets. Trucks that carry giant colorful dolls, playing bands, children and adults are wearing funny, grotesque masks to macabre masks and costumes to create joyful carnival atmosphere. The central events are held in Valletta. Similar but smaller events are held on the nearby towns and villages. The events in the periphery carry mysteries and gloomy nature. Food consumed during carnival includes perlini (multi-colored, sugar-coated almonds) and the prinjolata, which is a towering assembly of sponge cake, biscuits, almonds, and citrus fruits, topped with cream and pine nuts. During the carnival’s days the visitors (locals and guests) enjoy freedom feelings and genuine happiness.

 

Muzika-Muzika – 14.03.-16.03.2024: Mużika Mużika is a prestigious festival produced by Festivals Malta, that brings together different genres of Maltese music in an annual competition. Starting on Thursday with the semifinal, Mużika Mużika’s semifinalists will compete for a place in the finals. On Friday the festival will continue with an evening of classic Maltese songs, where the 20 semifinalists will interpret various Maltese hits together with established local singers. At the end of the second show, the 12 finalists of the festival will be announced. On Saturday the 12 finalists will compete for the winning title.

 

14.06.-30.06.2024 -The Malta International Arts Festival: runs for 15 days between June and July and presents a varied and multi-disciplinary arts program that embraces music, visual arts, theatre, dance, opera, installations, films, community projects, and interactive and participatory events that explore and build upon cultural heritage. Drawing audiences during the height of the Maltese summer, the festival revels in Malta’s unique historical and geographical setting by featuring site-specific productions with performances staged by such distinctive sites as Neolithic temple sites, Baroque architecture and the stunning Grand Harbor. With a focus on artistic excellence, The Malta International Arts Festival connects local talent with international artists, fostering cross-border and interdisciplinary collaborations, commissioning new work and hosting artist residencies, masterclasses, and workshops. Accessibility is at the heart of the festival, with a diverse program that appeals to different audiences while promoting broader tastes in culture and the arts. 08.07.-13.07.2024 – Jazz Festival: Considered by the international jazz community as a ‘true’ jazz festival and a beacon of artistic integrity, the Malta Jazz Festival is organised in mid-July by Festivals Malta and presents a panorama of jazz music in all its facets. In a climate where jazz festivals increasingly water down their line-ups with non-jazz elements, the Malta Jazz Festival stands out as an event that achieves a perfect balance between the savant and more popular elements of jazz, offering a program of world-class musicians that doesn’t compromise on the ‘jazz’ element. Since its inception in 1991, by the late Charles ‘City’ Gatt, the Malta Jazz Festival has hosted the most important jazz musicians, some of which have passed into the annals of jazz history, including Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, Elvin Jones, Lee Konitz and Paul Bley, among many others. The festival also has a strong local dimension and strives to stimulate the local jazz scene through exchanges, collaborations, commissions and free masterclasses. In the lead-up to the festival the streets of Valletta and other localities resonate with jazz with the ‘Jazz on the Fringe’ peripheral activities.

11.08.-14.08.2024 GLITCH Festival: Electronic music enthusiasts from all over the world are called to gather at the gates of the mystical House-and-Techno fortress in what promises to be another unmissable adventure on the sun-drenched Mediterranean island of Malta. Glitch Festival is back, and this year, they are bringing 65 acts to the Mediterranean island of Malta for a four-day rhythmic adventure. The festival boasts seven stages that have been carefully curated to provide attendees with the perfect spots to get lost in the music. The festival will kick off on Sunday, 13th August, with an explosive opening held under the glorious fortifications of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The festival’s main event will take place on the 14th and 15th of August at Gianpula Village, against the backdrop of the ancient medieval city of Mdina. And on the 16th, the festival will end with a boat party followed by a heartfelt closing party.

05.10.2024 Notte Bianca: is one of Malta’s biggest annual arts and culture festivals. For one special night, every first Saturday of October, the Valletta cityscape lights up with a spectacular celebration of the arts that is open to the public free of charge.
